This past weekend I was able to go to the High Museum of Art with my roommate for the first time ever! Ever since moving closer to the city I had been wanting to go, but just never made the plans to. My roommate, Lillie, needed to go for one of her classes and I was so excited when she invited me. It is located in Midtown Atlanta right off I-75.
To plan your visit there, I would suggest you go ahead and buy your ticket beforehand. General Admission tickets are only $14.50 and will be on your phone to scan upon arrival. We also parked in the parking deck right by the building; I would take that into consideration when considering the price of your trip. When buying tickets on the website, you are able to pick a time-slot that works for you. Although you arrive at the time of your ticket, there is no restriction as to how long you explore the museum until they close.
When entering the museum, you are able to scan a QR code on your phone that acts as a guide throughout the different levels of the museum, although we did not find ourselves utilizing this option too much. Walking towards the different exhibits, you can see that there are a few interactive ones that are closed due to covid. Through the hall where those exhibits are, there is a spiral ramp that you head up to get to the first floor of the art.
The museum has a few exhibits that are there always, but also a few exhibits are only there for a period of time. I like that they do this because you can go more frequently and always see new pieces.
During our time there we were able to see pieces of European art, African art, American Art, Folk and Self-Taught art, Modern and Contemporary art, Decorative art and designs, and photography. There was not an exhibition that did not amaze me. Some pieces were very old and you could tell the time that went into creating them and the attention to detail that there was. Some pieces were furniture, which I thought was especially neat because I never considered furniture pieces to be a piece of art. There were also beautifully detailed tea serving sets, and glass pieces. On the top floor, there is an inside bridge that crosses to a separate part of the building that had a lot of sculptures that really fascinated me.
This is truly the place to go when you need to put life on pause for a few hours. Lillie and I bought agreed in the car that while you are there enjoying all the exhibitions, it feels like time just stops and you are able to be fully present there and really enjoy the art. I attached a few photos of some of my favorite pieces I saw while we were there. Please visit their website to read more about the different pieces of work.
Before you leave the museum there is a gift shop with really fun things, including prints of some of the pieces they have in the museum that only cost about $15. They also have postcards of some of the pieces that are only about $1.
I had a Saturday well spent visiting the High Museum of Art and I hope you all are able to go soon!
