This week I visited a Georgia gem not far from home: Red Top Mountain State Park. Heading North on 75, I’ve passed exit 285 several times but never had a reason to get off. When one of my friends suggested I visit Red Top, I had no expectations other than to explore some place new. What I love about Georgia is that there are so many beautiful places to explore, and just when you feel like you’ve seen them all, you come across another scenic spot that’s tucked away. Red Top Mountain exceeded my expectations, and going there felt like the perfect getaway. Best of all? It was less than twenty minutes from my home in Marietta, so I’ll definitely be going back soon. If you’re looking for a local spot with mountainous lake views, this is the place for you. There are so many reasons you should visit Red Top: hiking, boating, fishing, camping, and enjoying the beautiful scenic views. There is definitely something for everyone! The park covers "1,776" acres and is surrounded by Lake Allatoona’s 12,000 acre body of water.[1] After exiting on 75 North and taking a right, you will approach Bethany Bridge within a minute of your drive. This iconic bridge was built seventy years ago, and if you check out Red Top Mountain’s Instagram account, you can even see a picture of it being constructed. There are two parking lots on the left side as you approach and exit the bridge, and I highly recommend that you pull off here because the views are too beautiful to pass up! There is a boat ramp here, and it is the perfect place to grab some pictures! If you venture up the mountain, you’ll find quaint lakeside cottages to rent. There are campsites as well, although they are currently being renovated. There are also plenty of hiking trails if you’re looking to get some exercise, like Iron Hill Trail. While I haven’t hiked Red Top, I have seen some gorgeous photos taken from these locations. So the views alone are worth the climb! According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources State Parks and Historic Sites, there are nearly fifteen miles of hiking trails. It’s definitely worth checking out Red Top’s website before you go so you can make the most of your time exploring. I’ll link it for you here (Red Top Mountain State Park Website)
There is also a sand beach that is currently under construction, which will be a popular spot once the weather warms up. It looks like it will be opening in early March, so that may be the perfect time to check out this “Georgia Gem.” What I love most about Red Top Mountain State Park is how peaceful it is and how stunning the views are. If you are in the metro Atlanta area, it is the perfect getaway, if only for an afternoon or weekend.
Here are some pictures of my trip so that you can experience it for yourself! I’d definitely recommend you check out this Georgia Gem the next time you are near Lake Allatoona, whether you are passing through our state or looking to stay local and explore. It is a perfect an inexpensive getaway for those who want to get out of the house for an afternoon or pack a lunch and spend the day. It definitely earns my five star rating, and I think it will earn yours too!
