Discover: Smith-Gilbert Gardens

Hey everyone! This week I excited to share a gem I recently discovered called Smith-Gilberts Garden. It is a botanical garden located in Kennesaw Georgia that has over 3,000 different plant species with many of them being considered rare in American gardens. The garden was owned by Mr. Richard Smith and Dr. Robert Gilbert with the mission of developing the housing with unique plants and sculptures. Over 35 years, the house has been opened to the public and is available for viewing. Currently because of social distancing, they advise visitors to pre-purchase their admission tickets online to ensure a contactless checkout.

Smith-Gardens features multiple different exhibits that you can visit. Some of the exhibits include the butterfly house, sculpture collection, koi pond and their bonsai collection. Although I enjoyed all the exhibits, my favorite was seeing the bonsai tree collection. There were so many different species of bonsai of different shapes and sizes which was interesting to see in person. I recommend checking their calendar for the availability for some of their exhibits because some are only available in specific seasons. Unfortunately, the Butterfly exhibit was closed during my visit, so I was not able to experience it. However, there is plenty to see at Smith-Gilbert so do not let time deter you from visiting. Additionally, the garden hosts many events each month so there is always plenty going on. Some examples of events that they host are Easter Egg hunts in April and a hummingbird watching event.

The garden is very easy to navigate through so long as you follow the designated paths. There are also maps available at the front. Using the maps, I found it very easy to navigate myself around using the landmarks clearly marked on the map and garden. IF you plan on visiting with larger groups, they also offer guided tours to provide a complete tour of the garden and its history. Additionally, this location is ideal for families with kids. All of the exhibits are child friendly and. There is a play structure where they can play and many opportunities where the kids can learn more about various more about the plant and wildlife at the botanical garden.

If you would be interesting in visiting a garden with a beautiful scenery, I highly recommend that you visit Smith-Gilberts Gardens. I really enjoyed my experience here and I think that more people should know about this lesser-known gem.
